This week has seen a further easing of Covid-19 restrictions across Ireland. With the Government releasing their reopening plan for summer. The World Health Organisation has also just released the following statement:
“A person can be infected when aerosols or droplets containing the virus are inhaled or come directly into contact with the eyes, nose, or mouth. The virus can also spread in poorly ventilated and/or crowded indoor settings, where people tend to spend longer periods of time. This is because aerosols remain suspended in the air or travel farther than 1 metre (long-range).” – World Health Organisation
This is a massively significant revision as up until this point WHO was adamant that the coronavirus is not an airborne disease and can only be transmitted via droplets (larger particles from a cough or sneeze that usually fall to the ground within 1-2 metres) not aerosols (smaller respiratory particles that can be released as we speak or breathe) these particles can linger in the air for significantly longer than droplets.
So what does this mean?
